A submarine used to take tourists to explore the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic is missing, and efforts are underway to recover the people on board, OceanGate Expeditions announced on Monday.

It was a small tourist submarine used to visit the area where the Titanic sank. It is missing in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of North America, several media reported on Monday June 19. The US Coast Guard said a search and rescue mission had been launched. The number of passengers on board is not known.

“We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely,” the company said in a statement sent to BBC News. “Our focus is entirely on the submersible’s crew members and their families.

OceanGate Expeditions is currently on its fifth Titanic “mission” of the year, according to its website, which was due to end on Thursday. Since 2021, OceanGate Expeditions has been chronicling the deterioration of the iconic ocean liner that struck an iceberg and sank in 1912.
