
At least 13 people died and three others are missing after a cyclone hit southern Brazil between Thursday June 15 and Friday June 16. The number of people affected is in the thousands, the Brazilian authorities announced on Sunday.
“The death toll has risen to 13, including a four-month-old baby, after the discovery of two bodies in the town of Caraa”, said the civil protection authority of this state bordering Uruguay and Argentina on Twitter. “The search continues”, it added.
Uninterrupted rain and strong winds have caused damage in dozens of municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, including its capital Porto Alegre. Violent winds swept along the coast, including the town of Tramandai, where winds of up to 101.9 km/h were recorded, according to official figures. Local media broadcast images of a car swept away by strong winds in a cemetery.
