KAKHOVKA DAM

Flood death toll rises in Ukraine

Ukrainian authorities have raised the death toll from flooding following the destruction of a dam, with six dead and 35 missing in areas under their control.

In Russian-occupied territories, Moscow officials this week reported eight dead and 13 missing in connection with the same tragedy.

The destruction of the Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper on Tuesday June 6 caused torrents of water to pour down on the river’s neighboring towns and villages, including the regional capital Kherson, recaptured by Ukrainian soldiers in November.

Both sides blame each other for the disaster, which affected both banks of the Dnieper, each controlled by one of the belligerents.

ATTACK IN THE BLACK SEA
Another ship attack in the Black Sea.

Russia had already reported a similar attack on May 24. On that date, the Russian patrol ship Ivan Khours was attacked in the Black Sea by remote-controlled launches in Turkey’s exclusive economic zone.

Several incidents involving Russian warships or aircraft have occurred in the Black Sea since the start of the offensive in Ukraine launched on February 24, 2022.

The area is also used for the export of Ukrainian grain, a crucial supply for countries in Africa and Asia, thanks to a UN-sponsored agreement with Turkey.
